The Artist.
Alicia Benetatos is an abstract artist based in Melbourne, Australia, creating large-scale paintings driven by colour, movement and layered mark making.
Her work is deeply intuitive. Each painting develops not from a fixed plan, but through instinct, layer by layer, mark by mark, allowing the composition to emerge through the process of making. Accidental marks, shifts in colour and unexpected interactions between layers are often followed rather than corrected, becoming integral to the finished work.
Colour sits at the centre of Alicia’s practice, alongside the rhythms of everyday life and music. A lyric half remembered, a song connected to a particular feeling or moment. These influences are rarely translated literally. Instead, they find their way into the mood, movement and energy of the work.
Layers are built up, obscured and revealed, allowing earlier marks to remain partially visible beneath the surface. The result is work that holds both movement and restraint, expressive without needing to tell the viewer what to see or feel.
Alicia’s paintings are intentionally open to interpretation. Rather than beginning with a predetermined meaning, each work leaves space for the viewer to form their own connection with it.
